The CCCCC wrapped up a climate change and plastics free project this week with the distribution of 100 drums to 14 high schools across Belize. The main objective of the project was to catalyse a zero-plastic policy by educating students on the impact of plastics on the environment with attention given to coral reefs, and the need to reduce use of plastics while promoting alternatives to single-use plastics.
The project was a collaboration between the British High Commission, Sol Belize Ltd. and the Ministry of Infrastructure, Development and Housing.
During a handover ceremony to Belmopan Comprehensive School in Belize, on Friday, March 5, Dr Colin Young, Executive Director said he was pleased to engage “schools who are already doing recycling and climate change programmes. Climate Change education in the region helps us bring attention to what would happen to the world, particularly the Caribbean if global temperatures increased to 1.5 degrees.” Also speaking at the brief ceremony was Her Excellency British High Commissioner Claire Evans OBE. In her remarks, she signaled the importance of cooperating with like-minded agencies like the CCCCC, noting that the Commission was “pleased to be part of this initiative that supports expanded learning on climate change in the school’s curriculum.”
