Overview
Program Goal
Reduce Climate Change-Induced Risks: The overall goal is to minimize the impacts of climate change on populations in Small Island States of the Caribbean, particularly in coastal areas vulnerable to rising sea levels, extreme weather events, and ecosystem degradation.
Improve Ecosystem Services for Climate Change Adaptation: The project aims to enhance the capacity of coastal ecosystems, such as coral reefs, sea grass beds, and mangroves, to provide critical services like coastal protection, habitat for marine life, and support for local livelihoods, including fishing and tourism.
Support Sustainable Ecosystem Management: By investing in the protection, sustainable management, and rehabilitation of coastal ecosystems, the project seeks to ensure that these ecosystems can continue to function effectively as natural buffers against climate change impacts.
Foster Local Adaptation Measures: The project seeks to empower local governmental and non-governmental organizations to design and implement adaptation measures that directly address local climate change risks and strengthen community resilience.
Promote Knowledge Sharing and Best Practices: Through monitoring, evaluation, and dissemination of lessons learned, the project aims to create a body of knowledge on successful climate adaptation strategies that can be shared with other regions facing similar challenges.
Outputs & Deliverables
Sustainable Improvements in Coastal Ecosystems:
- Implementation of measures to protect and sustainably manage coastal ecosystems, such as coral reefs, mangroves, and sea grass beds.
- Rehabilitation and substitution of degraded ecosystems with more resilient alternatives.
- Effective monitoring systems for assessing the health and effectiveness of coastal ecosystems in mitigating climate change impacts.
Local Adaptation Measures:
- Development and implementation of locally designed adaptation measures by governmental and non-governmental organizations in the participating countries.
- Tailored, community-driven strategies that enhance the resilience of coastal communities to climate change.
Monitoring and Impact Evaluation:
- Regular monitoring of the project’s progress and the impacts of adaptation measures on coastal ecosystems and communities.
- Collection of data on climate risks, ecosystem health, and community resilience to inform decision-making and future actions.
Knowledge Management and Best Practices:
- Systematic documentation of lessons learned, best practices, and success stories from the project.
- Dissemination of project results, experiences, and knowledge to stakeholders, including other Caribbean countries, to encourage replication and scaling of successful strategies.
Reports and Documentation:
- Comprehensive reports outlining the implementation of activities, the outcomes of ecosystem improvement efforts, and the impact of local adaptation measures.
- Publications or resources on the effectiveness of coastal protection strategies and climate change adaptation methods that can be shared with other regions facing similar challenges.
