Avril R. Williams, PhD, Professor of Supramolecular Chemistry and Nanotechnology, emphasized the significance of the award, stating:

“This memorial honors Hugh’s spirit and his commitment to his students. It not only recognizes their academic achievements with financial support but also embodies Hugh’s belief in experiential learning by providing an internship opportunity.”

Professor Williams said, this year, the competition for the award was fierce, with three Environmental Science graduates eligible, all with GPAs above 3.60.

UWI aims for the award to inspire future environmental scientists and shape the future of science in the region.

The award strengthens UWI’s reputation and showcases the potential of its students. It also contributes to the Caribbean’s economic growth, social development, and scientific advancement.

In congratulating this year’s winner, Wasani Martinez, Professor Williams expressed pride in his achievements and encouraged future candidates to “stay focused, work hard, and strive for excellence”.
