First Hugh Sealy Prize winner has BIG plans

Wasani Martinez, a 25-year-old Belizean environmentalist, is the first recipient of the Hugh Sealy Prize in Environmental Science. Enrolled at the University of the West Indies (UWI) since 2020, Wasani pursued a double major in Environmental Science and Ecology, driven by his childhood experiences in the coastal Garifuna village of Hopkins, Belize.

His passion for nature and commitment to addressing environmental issues earned him this prestigious award.

I’m excited to apply what I’ve learned in real-world projects

The Hugh Sealy Prize, sponsored by the Barbados Water Authority (BWA) and the Caribbean Community Climate Change Centre (CCCCC), is dedicated to supporting the next generation of environmental leaders.

The award recognizes exceptional academic achievement and a strong commitment to tackling environmental challenges.

In addition to a cash prize, Wasani will complete a 1-month internship with the 3R CReWS Project, assisting as an Environmental Scientist.

Wasani told the 3R-CReWS Communications, he plans to combine his education and scuba instructor skills to develop a study abroad program focused on environmental education and Garifuna culture. Ultimately, he aims to create an environmental and cultural education hub in his community of Hopkins, ensuring the preservation of both the natural environment and cultural heritage for future generations.

“I’m excited to apply what I’ve learned in real-world projects and continue working toward a sustainable future,” says Wasani.
